Problem

Health Wins is a membership concierge health plan exclusively for college students, providing access to health-care services and information to promote healthy life choices.

As a sophomore-year project from the core interaction design course, the goal was to practice visual design end-to-end — brand identity (logo), web, and app — and to learn how to communicate a brand's values visually rather than just decorate.

Process

Logo Design

  • Started with ~100 low-fidelity logo sketches in initial brainstorming. Looked promising on paper but didn't translate to high-fidelity quality.
  • First three iterations had a childish appearance and were mostly simple font variations. ("Yes... they suck...")
  • Turning point: after consulting with the professor and self-practice, realized the key is to focus on the brand's values. Since Health Wins is about health care and healthy lifestyle choices, the logos were re-iterated to infuse more "love" while preserving the distinctive "W" shape.

Web Design

First foray into website design. Applied fundamentals: layout, color, typography. Beyond visual skills, this deepened the author's understanding of user experience and how design enhances brand identity.

App Design

  • V1 prototype — hard to use; sizes and spacing weren't well controlled. Still served as a learning opportunity.
  • Iterations — optimized for accessibility; made all elements larger and more obvious; redesigned icons so they were easier to understand.

Outcome

A full Health Wins brand system covering logo, marketing website, and mobile app — built iteratively from over 100 logo sketches and multiple app prototypes.

Takeaways

  • Strong visual design isn't just aesthetics — it's about clearly expressing a brand's values.
  • Each prototype iteration improved visual hierarchy, accessibility, and UX.
  • Learned to combine design principles with empathy and clarity to communicate effectively.
  • First hands-on experience with both web and mobile app design.
